the 80s could not be more present in Kenneth MacLeod’s overall design, balancing the clean cut shapes of the tiled floor with over the stop pinstripe suits and reflective jumpsuits

The visual language for Chess drew directly from the vibrant world of 1980s pop-music video.

We blew up the games into a sporting event of Olympic proportions, characterising the chess champions as 80s rock-gods and mega-celebs, staging a rock-concert style arena, for the competitors to be led into. Above the action, an imposing 64-squared-grid hovered,  easing in and out with the intensity of the matches.

Six event "banners," formed with LED-screen tiles, gave us a surface on which to create an array of 1980s event graphics, score-cards, scenic views and mass media explosions, using live video feed from two roaming 1980s cameras on stage.
